Sunday Salon: Five Brief Items

On the patio at The Fix for Foodies in Nevada City, CA
1.  Things have been a bit swamped here so I've not been out in the world visiting book blogs as much as I usually do, as much as I'd like to.

I'm leading four Odyssey of the Mind teams down the home stretch to the regional tournament at the end of Feburary;  we've just started back to school and progress report grades are right around the corner;  the big seventh grade writing test is just five weeks away;  and I'm already way behind on grading.

Last weekend C.J. found a possible investment property in Upper Lake, about a two hour drive over the mountains from Vallejo where we live, so we threw the dogs in the back seat and drove up to find the little house charming, just the right size and in need of about six thousand dollars more than our repair budget will allow.  By now someone has surely snapped up the place and we're back to looking.

No worries, but on the road home over the mountains Dakota got car sick.

Yuck.

I'd have been better off staying home reading book blogs.

2.  Why do people have ring tones on their cell phones that are meant to sound like old-fashioned real phones?  Do  they think they are fooling anyone?  Does the sound of a real phone ringing remind them of grandma's house?  I remember my last real phone--a wall mounted beige phone with a hundred foot cord that reached through the entire downstairs and out onto the back patio.  I miss that phone.  You could really talk on that phone.

3.  I've been stuck tyring to finish the same book all week.  I like it.  It's very well written.  But it's the kind of book where very little happens, so everytime I start reading it I end up falling asleep.  I've even tried moving to the most uncomfortable easy chair in the house, but I still fell asleep after twenty pages.  Maybe I should try one of those five hour energy drinks.

4.  I've encountered my first temptation with The TBR Double Dog Dare.  I've been having a great time with it this year, I've even been thinking about extending it for myself at least, but this week there was this fascinating interview with sthe author of a new a new book about the Civil War called The Fall of the House of Dixie that just sounds so good.....

I'll resist.  Keep to the Dare.  Just a little over two months to go....

5.  I'm robo-posting today's entry.  C.J. and I have been selling off our stuff on eBay.  We're inspired by one of our guilty television pleasures, Hoarders.  Every time we break down and watch an episode, we end up donating a box of stuff to a local thrift store.  We have a lot of stuff, but we're not hoarders.  Last month I listed a bunch of the better stuff on eBay and sold in item to someone up in Nevada City.  I decided to seize the day and offer delivery instead of packing and shipping the item.  This way we have an excuse to visit one of our favorite places, The Fix for Foodies a raw-food restaurant in Nevada City.

Whenever we tell people we're going to eat at a vegetarian restaurant, we're asked if  we're vegetarians.  We're not, we reply.  We just like good restaurants.  We're not Chinese either, but we eat at Chinese restaurants.

The Fix has this wonderful thing they call raw pizza.  It's really like more like a salad than a pizza, but it's delicious.

I'd love to take that book I mentioned earlier so I can read a few pages while C.J. is driving, but did I mention that stack of papers I have to grade.  Dogs are welcome on the patio at The Fix for Foodies, but after what happened last time, Dakota is staying home.

This week has been Temptation Central for me regarding the TBR Dare. I got 2--2!!!--ARCs of new Sylvia Plath bios. Yes, I am one of *those* people. It's going to take a whole lot of self-restraint.

So sorry to hear about Dakota getting sick! Poor little thing! And I have an answer, albeit a very specific one, about the old-fashioned telephone ring tone sounds. My husband has a hearing disability, and the old fashioned ring is the loudest of all the tones offered! And finally, yes, why is it that even if you are at a NON vegetarian restaurant and get pasta or something, people "accuse" you (not just ask, but accuse!) you of being vegetarian! Ugh!

Both of my dogs get really car sick. EVERY TIME. I finally found out you can give them Bonine or Dramamine (but adjusted for their weight). If this continues to be a problem for Dakota, you might want to look into it. I'm going to use it in a few weeks so I'll try to remember to let you know how it goes.

Amy, I understand. I looked for a couple of books today that I've been longing for, but didn't find them. Had I found them....

Rhapsody, That is a good reason and another example of why the older phones were actuall better 'phones'.

Jenners, We've no long trips planned for the dogs until this summer. We're thinking of renting a cabin for a week somewhere. We'll have to look into medication for Dakota.

One of the best restuarants I've ever been to was a vegetarian one. I'm not vegetarian but I'd happily eat there every week if I had the money. Sorry to hear Dakota is car sick. My oldest son is sick every time we go on twisty roads. Sick is one of the worst things to deal with, especially in the confines of a car, so I feel your pain. Hope you have a lovely week!

I have an old-fashioned ring on my cell phone because my brain reacts to it differently. When it says something or plays a bit of music sometimes I tune it out and think oh, that's odd, when did that song come on the radio? But if it actually rings my instant reaction is to jump up and answer it.

Okay. Why do I have an old-fashioned ring tone on my cell phone? I don't really care what it sounds like (within reason). I need it to tell me - "wake up! answer me!". And I find the old fashioned sound does this best
