The TBR Double Dog Dare has just passed the the halfway mark. How are you doing? Still in for the full term?
Fortunately for me the TBR Double Dog Dare is not a book buying ban; I've been buying books. I know this largely defeats the purpose, but an afternoon trip to the bookstore can really rescue an otherwise lousy day. My little stack of new books sits in a separate pile waiting for April 1 when the TBR Double Dog Dare ends. I'm sure some of them will still be around for the TBR Triple Dare.
Meantime, I've stuck to my TBR stack since the third week of December--yes, I started a little early. Usually I do a lot more reading in the winter months than I have this year, but I've made a decent dent in the TBR stack. I have this week off, mid-winder break, so I may get through a few more titles. However, there are quite a few little chores around the house that may get in the way.
Don't you hate it when daily life comes between you and your reading?

I couldn't have said it better! I'm still hanging in with you and hoping to make it to April 1. It's getting harder, though - Valentine presents of books that I've been anxious to read are just staring at me from the shelf. And, like you, my acquisition has not tapered off near as much as I would've liked. It doesn't help that Half-Price Books is having an book lover's sale all weekend that gives you an extra 20% off all that you buy. What's a bibliophile to do?!? ;)
My kids are watching me like hawks. They want someone to make this harder by adding the "can't buy anything to it" -- don't think they realize that that could result in some sort of mental breakdown. Just kidding! (I think. :) )
Thanks for daring us all!
I've knocked 5 off of the TBR pile - unfortunately marking and studying for my Masters gets in the way. We also have a week off of school in the UK this week so hopefully this will help me get a few more read.
I'm changing my ideas about reading and buying books and picking books from the library. I've decided that I'm not worrying about it any more if I buy books or check out books that I don't read past the title. I've decided it's okay. Maybe that's all the reading of that particular book that I need.
(Or, perhaps, I'm just finding ways to excuse my extravagant book buying habits?)
I am so in. I could go for years this way I think. I have only a few commitments that I have to keep (She Reads and my book club) and other than that, I keep digging through my stack and it seems like I never make a bit of headway.
I'm still in! I don't think I could manage without buying books, but so far I've been able to resist reading the new ones. One of the books I claimed an exemption for is coming out this week, and I'm looking forward to reading it, but not in a desperate craving sort of way. Of course, I may still be reading The Count of Monte Cristo on April 1st - I don't feel I'm making much progress but I'm enjoying it.
Similarly there has been no book buying ban and I have a whole heap waiting patiently for april to start, it is quite a temptation sitting on the living room window sill, one in particular is calling my name. Keep up the good work everyone.
Just reviewed Howards End today.
I wrote about the saboteur that is the Ayewrite Book Festival the other day.

Though I'm thinking (hoping) to get to the end of March with only one book breaking the rules. (Mind I haven't seen the full programme yet ....)
So far, I'm still in, but I know I won't quite make it until the end because I have a e-galley of Kate Atkinson's new book, and it'll expire before the dare is done, and I'm unwilling to wait the many weeks that it'll take to get a copy from the library. That may be the only book I read that doesn't fit the parameters, unless something else comes along.
I feel like I'm only getting started with the dare because I had so many new books and a couple of review copies at the start of the year, and that's mostly what I've been writing. I'm now reading more from my more long-term stacks, so it's finally feeling like the Dare is doing what it's supposed to do.
I am doing really well so far. I did buy some books in January and came into a number of books as well due to my mother in law downsizing but they are kept separate from my TBR shelf and I haven't touched them. I've read just over 30 books so far. (I'm blessed with a very flexible work schedule that involves a lot of down time and travel time!)
I'm still in. And have found some nice surprises, quite a few books sitting quiet and un-noticed on my shelves for a long time turned out to be gems when I finally opened them. Before the Dare I hadn't been reading much at all but finding really good books again is getting me back into the habit of making time to read.
"An afternoon trip to the bookstore can really rescue an otherwise lousy day." You said it. Unfortunately, that's half the reason I haven't participated in the Dare the last two years! Who wants to buy new books (or pick up new library books) and then not look at them till April? Other than, ahem, you, of course... :D
I'm glad to see so many people still in, in spite of buying books and other temptations. I do see Richard's point. Yes, I really do.
I'm in and out and in again. By the time the TDD is over, I will have knocked several off of my TBR.
"Don't you hate it when daily life comes between you and your reading?" Ahem---yes. Although audiobooks do help with this a little bit.
And to Richard's point. I am TERRIBLE (and notorious) at buying books and not reading them for YEARS. Hopefully I'm not alone with this habit... Ha!
For now I've been reading only from my TBR :) 5 books and the sixth is on the go... But I won't say how many new ones I got! XD
One little slip (OK, a big 1000 page slip), but I'm back in again. Fall of Giants was on the condo bookshelf in Florida and I couldn't resist. It turned out to be a great vacation read!
I'm still in! Enjoying my TBRs and restoring order from chaos in my bookcases.
